Although this is a five car model, it should be considered a single car. The cars are designated with alpha characters in the following order: B, C, D, E and A.Construction This Z scale five car spine car set, made from a precision kit, is made primarily two from cast metal parts. One part is the car body and the other is the hitch. The B, D and D cars have brake cylinders and valves added. The B and A cars have platforms and brake wheels. There was a lot of cleaning to remove the feeds, bleeds and flash from the castings. Many of the decals were so small that they were difficult to apply because they tended to float into a crooked position. Detail This Z scale model is a precision kit with much detail built into the casting. Platforms on the B and A cars are etched stainless steel. The brake wheels are separately glued to the platform. Detail also comes from the many decals applied to each of the five cars. Weathering also enhances the detail of the five car set.
Conformity This Z scale model typifies a five car spine car. Many photographs are available on the Internet and a few are enclosed in the accompanying workbook. The bulk of the photographs indicated much weathering and consequently this model was weathered accordingly. Finishing and Lettering This Z scale model of a five car spine car set is TTX yellow. The hitches are orange with heavy weathering where the hitch of the trailer joins to the trailer hitch of the car. There are eleven (11) decals on each car for a total of fifty-five (55) for the model. Based on many prototype photographs, heavy weathering on the hitches, the deck where the trailer wheels are located and the underside where track bed spills are picked up from high speed movement. Scratch Building This Z scale model is made from a precision kit of metal casting bodies and hitches and etched stainless steel platforms. Since only paint and weathering was added it does not qualify as a scratch built model. List of Materials This Z scale model is made from a precision kit that included everything including Micro-Trains Lines truck #956 and 953. Material added was yellow paint, orange paint and Dull Coat. Weathering chalk consisting of black, brown and gray were also added.
