The reference material used to construct this car is from an article in "N-Scale Magazine" July/August 2004, pages 59 through 63 but the inspiration to build these models come a number of digital photographs taken of a set of four prototype cars in the Dallas, Texas area.
Construction Construction of this Z scale model is in three parts. One part is the deck, which includes the deck, underbody details and truck-coupler assemblies. Another part is the sides of the car. Another part is the ends. Approximately 79 individual pieces make up this model passenger car.The deck is a set of dimension styrene assembled so that a cavity for lead weight is made.
The deck ready for final assembly is shown below:
The underbody is as shown below:
The body sides are constructed of laminated styrene strips as shown below:
The vertical braces were positioned using jig shown below:
The ends are as shown below:
Detail The details making up this Z scale side dump car consist of approximately 79 individual pieces. Please see the list of materials at the end of this write-up. Adobe PhotoShop Elements and Microsoft PowerPoint were used to create the four total decals making up the road name and number. Note that, like the prototype, the numbers are mostly unreadable. "Move as Scrap" was made using a white pencil. The underbody detail is made up of 14 individual pieces of dimensioned styrene and brass rod. A form of dry-brushing using brushes and the ends of balsa strips are used to create the unreadable car markings. Weathering is done with a mixture of brown and black caulk on the on the underbody and a mixture of browns on the ends and sides. The car body is painted with "Special Oxide Red" over a gray primer. The trucks are weathered using a mix of one part "Grimy Black" and three parts of "Special Oxide Red".
Conformity The reference material used to construct this car is from an article in "N-Scale Magazine" July/August 2004, pages 59 through 63 and a number of digital photographs taken of a set of four prototype cars in the Dallas, Texas area.
Finishing and Lettering The Z scale car body has a base coat of "Lt Gray" spray primer and a "Special Oxide Red" paint finish. After all detail and decals were completed several coats of "Testors Dullcoat" were applied to give the model a clean appearance. Scratch Building Detail plans and diagrams are included in this write-up and in the accompanying project binder. The reference material used to construct this car is from an article in "N-Scale Magazine" July/August 2004, pages 59 through 63 and a number of digital photographs taken of a set of four prototype cars in the Dallas, Texas area. Approximately 79 individual styrene pieces are scratch built or exempt trucks and couplers. The non-exempt component is the brake wheel. List of Materials Side Assemblies (2 each per model car)
