Crane at Mockingbird and Halifax

In

Dallas, Texas

Construction

The crane at Mockingbird and Halifax is a scratch built Z Scale structure made of assorted styrene with a brass ladder and safety rail. The structure was constructed from photographs of the prototype and scaled sketches. The total individual component count is 130.

Step one was to make eight support columns made from 1/8" styrene I-Beam, .030" x .040" styrene strip and .010" x .030" styrene strip. Note that one end only has double columns in different planes for longitudinal support. Next the main rails are made from 3/16" I-Beam and the cross rails are made from 1/8" I-Beam and four of the columns are attached to each beam.

The two traveling cranes are made from 1/8" styrene I-Beam and assorted styrene stock. The cranes are slightly different in shape and coloring. Hoist and electrical cables were made using a single strand of electrical wire.

Detail

One difficult detail on the Z Scale to construct was the eight columns because the small size of the components. A jig was made to hold the components in place while the glue/cement set up. Other details are the two traveling cranes made of 1/8" styrene I-Beam and assorted styrene stock. Hoist and electrical cables were made using a single strand of electrical wire. The cranes are slightly different in shape and coloring. The structure was weathered with a mix of black and dark brown chalk. The tops of the beams where the crane traveled was further weathered with a lead pencil.

Conformity

The prototype was visited several times and approximately forty digital photographs were taken and used to establish dimensions, shape and color. No selective compression was used on this Z Scale model. Note the photos below for conformance between the prototype and the model. Note that the coloring of the crane in the background is a slightly different color.

Finishing and Lettering

The color of the finish is approximately "Railbox" yellow. The crane in the background is "E/L Yellow" with "Reefer White" added to lighten the color to more closely match the prototype. "Conrail Blue", "E/L Gray", "Engine Black" and "ATSF Silver" were used on the electrical cabinet, motors, cable drums and cables on the cranes. . The structure was weathered with a mix of black and dark brown chalk. The tops of the beams where the crane traveled was further weathered with a lead pencil.

Scratch Building

Digital photographs and personally drawn sketches were used to construct this Z Scale structure and are in the binder provided with this write-up. The structure is one hundred percent scratch built from stock styrene and brass. Four jigs were made to construct this structure.

The List of materials got clobbered when I inserted it into FrontPage so I simply deleted all the junk.
